Chill a coupe glass in the freezer.
Combine gin, lime juice, and simple syrup in a shaker with ice.
Shake hard for 15 seconds.
Double strain into the chilled coupe.
Garnish with a thin lime wheel.
The Gimlet: The Navy’s Medicine
British Royal Navy sailors were given a daily ration of lime juice to prevent scurvy. Adding gin made it palatable. The Gimlet was born of necessity and became a classic.
Fresh vs Rose’s Lime
Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe insisted “a real gimlet is half gin and half Rose’s Lime Juice.” Modern bartenders strongly prefer fresh lime juice for superior flavor.
