Vodka Cocktails
Vodka is the blank canvas of the bar: it is meant to be neutral, which means almost every vodka drink is really a drink about its mixer. That is also why the same bottle can be perfect in a Moscow Mule and disappointing in a Martini, and why this list puts both under one roof.
Only drinks whose ingredient list actually calls for vodka appear here — a category label is not enough.

What vodka brings to a drink
What you are buying. Vodka is distilled to at least 37.5% ABV in the EU and 40% ABV in the US, then filtered. Paying more usually buys a cleaner distillation and a rounder mouthfeel rather than flavour: in a shaken drink with juice or soda, the gap between a mid-range and a top-shelf bottle is close to undetectable.
Where the bottle matters. In a Martini or a Vesper the spirit arrives almost undiluted, so a harsh, peppery vodka shows immediately — that is the one drink where spending more is rational. In a Bloody Mary or a Moscow Mule the Worcestershire, the tomato or the ginger beer is in charge, and a plain bottle is the correct choice.
Flavoured vodka and strength. Vanilla and citrus vodkas earn their place in an Espresso Martini, a Cosmopolitan or a Lemon Drop; outside those they add sugar and can taste synthetic. On strength: a 40% vodka puts a Moscow Mule near 10–12% ABV and a Lemon Drop Martini around 22% once it has been shaken.
Frequently asked questions
Is an expensive vodka worth it?
Only in drinks where vodka is nearly the whole recipe — a Martini or a Vesper. In anything with juice, tomato or ginger beer, a mid-range bottle is indistinguishable from a premium one.
Which vodka for an Espresso Martini?
A plain 40% vodka works fine; vanilla vodka rounds the coffee with a softer, dessert-like edge, which is what many bars pour. Avoid heavily sweetened flavoured vodkas — they push the drink towards syrup.
Can I keep vodka in the freezer?
Yes. At 40% ABV vodka freezes near -27 °C, so a domestic freezer at -18 °C keeps it perfectly pourable and ice cold, which also means less dilution once it hits the glass.
