Fill a tall glass with crushed ice.
Add coconut rum and blue curaçao.
Pour in Sprite.
Add a splash of coconut syrup.
Garnish with a lime wheel.
A drive-in classic, with spirits
The blue coconut soda sold at the drive-in is a soft drink: coconut flavour, a squeeze of lime and a colour that looks like a swimming pool. This is the spiked home version, an independent recipe with no affiliation to the brand, and it takes about three minutes.
The exact build
- Coconut rum, 1.5 oz — the whole coconut character, at roughly 21% ABV.
- Blue curacao, 0.5 oz — colour and a dry orange note. Half an ounce is the ceiling; past that it tastes like mouthwash.
- Coconut syrup, 0.25 oz — a quarter ounce rounds the flavour out when the rum alone reads thin.
- Sprite or 7-Up, 4 oz — fizz and sweetness, poured cold from a fresh bottle.
- Lime wheel — garnish, and a squeeze if the glass tastes flat.
Why the colour survives here
Pineapple juice would turn blue curacao green, but lemon-lime soda is clear, so the blue holds. Build the rum and the curacao first, add crushed ice, then pour the soda down the side of the glass. One stir from the bottom is enough; the drink should be an even turquoise, not bright ink.
Strength and calories
A coconut rum at 21% puts about 0.32 oz of alcohol in the glass and the curacao adds 0.1 oz: near 6.5% before the ice, around 5.5% once the crushed ice melts in. It is a long, light drink at roughly 180 kcal, and the coconut syrup, not the rum, hides most of the sugar.
Mistakes
- A heavy hand with the blue curacao. Blue teeth and a bitter aftertaste.
- Flat soda. Open a fresh can and keep it in the fridge.
- Too much coconut syrup. A quarter ounce is enough; coconut rum is already sweet.
- Crushed ice in a warm glass. It melts before the soda has time to chill.
Two variations
- Frozen Ocean Water — blend the rum, curacao, syrup and a cup of ice, then top with soda.
- Creamy version — replace the coconut syrup with 0.5 oz of cream of coconut.
Sonic Ocean Water Cocktail FAQ
Does the drive-in version contain alcohol?
No. The soft drink is alcohol-free; the spirits are what this home version adds.
Why does mine taste like sunscreen?
Usually too much coconut syrup or an especially heavy coconut rum. Start with the quarter ounce and add no more than a barspoon at a time.
